Tambopata Chumcho Macaw Clay Lick – Tapir Clay Lick Tour 4-Days

Your flight from Puer to Maldonado will offer you a panoramic view of the winding Madre de Dios river and the lush canopy of jungle trees that characterize the southern Amazon baisen. With Tambopata Expeditions visit the Tambopata National Reserve and its stunning biodiversity of wildlife and plants, this protected area still has indigenous tribes who do not communicate with outsiders. In the untamed rainforest, outside Puer to Maldonado, your private cabaña at the charming Guacamayo INN (Guacamayo means in English macaw) will be a comfortable haven that also brings you close to nature. Enjoy fresh, local meals at the restaurant in between guided excursions to sites such as Chuncho collpa de Guacamayo (Chuncho Macaw Clay Lick), where large concentrations of macaws and parrots are easily visible. Travel by motor boat as you watch the sunrise and try to spot birds, capibaras, caimans, tapirs, and with luck jaguars by the river bank. Encounter unusual insects, incredibly large trees, and perhaps some monkeys along the shaded jungle trail. After your excursión, relax at Guacamayo INN with cock tail from the bar while listening to the sounds of the lively wildlife around you.

The next day the team of Tambopata Expeditions visit Collpa de Sachavaca (Tapir Clay Lick), the most famous visitor here is the Tapir (Tapir us terrestris), to eat the clay (mineral salts). The Tapir is the largest mammal of the Amazon, an adult Tapir can weigh up to 330 kg, here we may have a chance to monkey, deer, or peccaries. Try to identify recent visitors to the Clay Lick by examining their food prints.

TOUR ITINERARY:

Day 1. Puerto Maldonado to Tambopata River – Guacamayo INN.

Your jungle adventure begins when your official tour guide greets you at the airport, bus station, or hotel in Puerto Maldonado. Your guide will lead you on all activities for the duration of your trip. Tambopata Expeditions will take you to Puerto Maldonado city center, to do some last-minute shopping for things we might have forgotten such as batteries, a rain poncho, a flashlight for night activities, etc.

Then journey for 90 minutes from partfields and farms to the boat port community Filadelfia. Next, enjoy a relaxing 30-minute motorboat ride on the Tambopata River. On the way, you may see local people working (artisanal mining) on the river bank.

When you arrive at Guacamayo INN, your tour guide will bring you to the main house, for the check-in. The manager will welcome you with a cool drink made from the local fruits and mineral water. After check-in, you will be escorted to your private cabaña, named after a local indigenous tribe, where you can relax and unpack. All meals and beverages at Guacamayo INN are made using fresh fruits and garden vegetables, as well as other local ingredients.

Introduction to the Jungle:

This afternoon, the Tambopata Expeditions guide will introduce you to the jungle. Enjoy a botanical walk along jungle trails to discover ancient trees, monkeys, macaw (local name GUACAMAYO), tucan, and other wildlife, Learn your way around the area.

Jungle Night Walk:

Before dinner, your jungle specialist guide will lead you on a night walk along the jungle trails where you can experience the sounds of the Amazon jungle to try to spot night insects, night monkeys, night birds, snakes, with luck other night animals.

Return, to our restaurant for a dinner characterizing local cuisine, from the bar, you may wish to select some Peruvian beer, wine, or an exotic cocktail, made especially for your return to the cabaña and fall asleep to the music of the Amazon jungle all around you.

Day 2. Tambopata National Reserve – Collpa Chuncho Macaw Clay Lick

Wake up early and join your guide for a 45-minute boat ride to the Macaw and parrot Clay Lick. Watch the sunrise on the Tambopata River from your boat. Following a quick check-in at the Rager Station, try to spot caimans and birds, as well as mammals such as tapir, capibara, and monkeys along the river bank. At the clay lick, you will observe a large concentration of several species of jungle macaws, parrots, and parakeets. You can even see a few toucans and other bird species. Enjoy your boxed breakfast surrounded by nature, Tambopata Expeditions will enjoy the macaws and parrots all this morning with you.

Return to Guacamayo INN in the late morning. Relax time in your cabaña or walk around the property grounds looking for smaller wildlife. Enjoy lunch in our restaurant.

Our local expert will be giving you a detailed tour here. Once you have had your fill of this short hike, we will drive you to the boat pier in Atalaya. Our trip by car will end here as we will embark on a motor boat ride on the Madre de Dios river.

Jungle Tree Walk:

After lunch, enjoy your jungle specialist guide for a walk through both primary and secondary forests. Unter the tree's top canopy encounter trees such as ceiba, iron, garlic tree, and many other tree species. These are some of the largest trees found in the Amazon jungle, your guide will explain the region’s medicinal plants and the critical importance of the rainforest within the ecosystem.

Caiman Night Experince:

After the sun sets, your guide will take you on a night expedition in the Tambopata River by boat. We will search for caiman, nocturnal birds, capybara, and other animals that are most active at night. As well look up at the Amazon sky to find the planet Venus and identify brightly illuminated constellations such as the Southern Cross or Orion’sBelt.

Day 3. Tambopata National Reserve – Tapir Clay Lick (collpa de sachavaca)

Piranha Fishing:

After breakfast, take a motorboat ride, then enjoy a moderate hike deep into the primary forest. You will see jungle trees over 150 feet all of which are more than a century old. Along the way, looking for animals, monkeys, butterflies, and unique jungle flowers, At the edges of the wild, almost an unexplored Black Lake. Here in this lake where we do sport fishing, Let's try fishing for piranha and other species of fish. You may see hoatzin (A pre-historic bird), you also try to spot other lake birds such as cormorants, kingfishers, and herons, with lucky river otters.

Returnto Guacamayo INN for lunch.

Tapir Clay Lick:

After lunch, we take a 1-hour walk through the primary forest to the Collpa de Sachavaca (Tapir ClayLick). Along the way, you may see capuchin no monkeys, howler monkeys, woodpeckers, and wild turkeys may make an appearance. Return to Guacamayo INN for storytelling by the bonfire. Learn about local history, native culture, and unique jungle experiences.

Day 4. Guacamayo INN to Puerto Maldonado (bus station or airport)

Enjoy one more time our breakfast before checking out. Return to Puerto Maldonado, Tambopata Expeditions drop you off at your hotel, bus station, and airport. In that case, were commend taking your flight in the afternoon.
